Realflow 5

NextLimit released RealFlow 5 to their current customers. A public release will follow soon.

New features include:

  • Hybrido – a hybrid solver that allows to simulate large bodies of water with sophisticated secondary effects like splashes, foam and mist
  • Caronte – a body dynamics solver with rigid body, soft body and link simulation. Soft bodies include permanent deformations as well.
  • Improved performance with the particle based solver (should be up to 20 times faster for standard fluids)
  • Job Manager to spread simulations across several computers
  • the standard license comes with a free copy of RealFlow Renderkit v2 for Mental Ray or Renderman (on Windows/Linux)
  • Realflow 5 is no longer licences per CPU
  • a full feature list can be found here.

Boxx Technologies Personal Render Option

Boxx Technologies announced their renderPRO personal render option. It is a quiet PC with a small form factor that brings dedicated rendering to your desk. It is available in three different configurations with 4, 8 or 12 Xeon cores and up to 192 GB of RAM. Operating System options are Windows and Linux. Of course you need software that has the option of network rendering to use the renderPRO. It is a great solution to free up computing power at your workstation.

Effects Garden 2010 Reel Opener

Putting together a reel is always hard work – especially when you are occupied with working on new projects. Sometimes you don’t have the opportunity to show off your skills in commercial projects though so you “need” to do some projects on the side. So we decided to create an opener for our 2010 reel using fluids.

Sonja did the setup in Realflow (she did her masters thesis on fluids) and I took care of the lighting and shading in Cinema 4D / Vray (between meetings, as it seems to have become common these days). The reel still is in works but the opener is “finished”. The splash at the very end with the logo is actual footage rather than liquid simulation.
